GARY Boyd's British Open adventure is over after a brave second round display at Royal Birkdale on Friday evening.
The Cherwell Edge golfer fired a six-over par 76 in his second round for a finishing score of 13 over par – four shots over the level required to make the midway cut.

Twenty-one-year old Boyd, making his debut appearance in one of golf's four Majors, will look back on a treble bogey six on the par three seventh as the moment when his Open dream first started to falter.

The Middleton Cheney resident - who fired a respectable seven over par 77 in Thursday's opening 18 holes - was in the last group to tee off in the second round.

And he made a bright start, picking up a birdie three on the second and a further four pars in the opening five holes.

A dropped shot on the sixth put him back to level par for the round, and when he got into serious trouble on the 178-yard seventh he was suddenly facing an uphill battle at 10 over par.

With it looking likely that the cut to play the final two days would be set at nine over par, Boyd got back on track with a birdie three on the ninth and steadied his round with pars on 10, 11 and 12.

He went into the last five holes knowing that par golf would see him into the weekend, but bogies on 13 and 15 were followed by a double bogey on the par four 16th as his score rose to +13 – an unfair reflection on his magnificent efforts over two days.

As the last group out, near empty stands greeted Boyd and his playing partners as they walked up the 18th, but few would doubt that the British Open has not seen the last of this young golfing talent.

Korean KJ Choi led the Open on Friday night with a two-round total of one-under par.
